Our Plan to Fight Election Subversion

We hope we will never need this plan, but we must be prepared.

Our elections belong to the voters. If anyone tries to prevent votes from being counted, block lawful certification, or overturn the will of the voters, we must be prepared to respond together peacefully, strategically, and at scale, with determination and passion for democracy!

Why prepare now?

Election interference can take many forms: voter suppression, unlawful seizure of or interference with ballots, obstruction of lawful certification, or attempts to prevent duly elected officials from taking office.

Responding effectively takes advance preparation. People need to know where to find trustworthy updates, how to join coordinated actions, and how to avoid rumors and misinformation. The goal is to protect lawful election processes and ensure that every eligible vote is counted and the voters' decision is respected.

Our first line of defense is participation: vote, vote early if you can, and help others make a plan to vote. Early voting gives people more time to resolve problems with registration or ballots before Election Day.

What might we be called to do?

The appropriate response will depend on what happens. Possible coordinated, peaceful actions include:

Do not act on rumors. Specific calls to action—including timing, locations, goals, and safety guidance—will come from organizers as circumstances become clear. All participation should be peaceful and voluntary.

Our pledge to defend the vote

I believe in the shared American values of freedom, justice, and the peaceful transfer of power. I believe that in our elections, every vote should be counted and the will of the voters respected.

I know there are serious risks before, during, and after the upcoming election, including voter suppression, unlawful seizure or interference with ballots, obstruction of lawful certification, and refusal to seat democratically elected leaders.

Therefore, I pledge to take action to defend our elections and the will of the voters, wherever and whenever possible, by joining targeted, peaceful protests and sustained economic noncooperation — including no work, no school, and no shopping — until lawful election processes are allowed to proceed, the lawful election results are honored, and those elected by the voters are able to take office.

We are not acting alone

Many organizations are preparing to defend free and fair elections, including Bay Resistance, the ACLU, No Kings, national Indivisible, May Day Strong, local California Indivisible groups, and many others. We are talking to each other so that the action we take is coordinated and strong.

Help everyone be ready

Spread the word now, even though we hope this plan will never be needed. Share this page with friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, and community groups. Encourage them to subscribe for updates, make a voting plan, and talk through how they might participate in peaceful action if the election process is threatened.

Each of us must be prepared and committed to defend every voter's voice and the peaceful transfer of power.
